What is ethics education?

For us, ethics education means developing young people’s ethical awareness and fostering dialogue on values questions. This helps equip them to navigate a changing world and participate actively in shaping its future.

    Promoting ethics education

    Learning humanistic values should be a core component of children’s education and personality development. We therefore support school projects that nurture the social and ethical competence they need for responsible interaction with one another and their surroundings.

    Facilitating values dialogue

    We believe that more communication within and between societies, especially values-oriented communication, is needed to foster mutual understanding and trust. We therefore support institutions and networks that facilitate intercultural and interfaith dialogue.

Our goal

We believe a firm moral compass is a fundamental requirement of good leadership - responsible decision-making demands a fair and principled approach. This is especially important in business and the global economy where higher ethical standards are urgently needed to promote the common good.  

We therefore fund educational initiatives that engage young people with broad ethical questions, intercultural values dialogue and standard-raising in business. We regard Hans Küng’s Global Ethic as a lodestar for our mission.

    Akademie "Mehr Werte!"

    Project description

    Wir leben in einer Zeit des Wandels: unterschiedliche politische Strömungen beeinflussen die Gesellschaft, der digitale Wandel wirkt sich auf alle Lebensbereiche aus und auch die Corona-Folgen stellen den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt auf eine harte Probe. Dadurch erfordert das Zusammenleben ein hohes Maß an Werten wie Toleranz und Verantwortungsbewusstsein. Allerdings findet Wertebildung nicht mehr wie früher automatisch in der Familie statt, sondern verstärkt außerhalb. Hier kommt den Schulen nun eine besondere Verantwortung zu: Sie stehen vor der Herausforderung, die Leadershipkompetenzen und Wertesysteme der Schüler*innen nachhaltig zu fördern.

    Was uns verbindet - Fünf Weltreligionen in unserem Klassenzimmer

    Project description

    Das Evangelische Johannesstift Berlin hat im Rahmen seiner Kampagne „Kinder beflügeln“ 2018 das Pilotprojekt „Was uns verbindet – Fünf Weltreligionen in unserem Klassenzimmer“ initiiert, um den interreligiösen Dialog von jungen Menschen in der Schule zu erleichtern.

    Die gemeinnützige Thales-Akademie ermöglicht es Menschen aus Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Zivilgesellschaft, sich praxisnah und weltanschaulich unabhängig mit grundlegenden philosophischen und ethischen Fragen unserer Zeit zu beschäftigen und eine eigenständige Haltung zu diesen zu entwickeln.

    Campus-Debatten

    Project description

    Die Campus-Debatten sind studentische Redewettbewerbe, bei denen gezielt Streitgespräche zu aktuellen Themen geführt werden. Dabei müssen die Debattanten eine zugeloste Meinung verteidigen und sich in die Argumente ihrer Mitstreiter reindenken, um diese zu entkräften. Dadurch wird die Reflexion der eigenen Meinung angeregt und der Austausch gefördert.

    Project description

    Was zeichnet gute Führung aus? Welche gesellschaftliche Verantwortung tragen Unternehmer? Und wie wirtschaftet man ethisch? Die Stipendiaten des Doktorandenkollegs "Ethik und gute Unternehmensführung" am Wittenberg-Zentrum für Globale Ethik (WZGE) forschen drei Jahre lang zu Fragen wie diesen.

Why is ethics education important?

Karl Schlecht explains what it means to him and why it’s a focus for our foundation. 

Ethics education for me means nurturing the humanistic qualities necessary for ethical action and trust-building through lifelong learning. 

What has inspired your deep engagement with ethics, especially trust? 

I’ve been inspired by the Global Ethic approach and the thinking of Erich Fromm. I’ve also learnt the meaning of trust and (creating) a culture of trust through my lifelong entrepreneurial experience as the founder and owner of Putzmeister, a concrete pump manufacturing firm operating globally. No customer buys a product they don’t trust. 

 

Why is ethics education so important? 

My goal for long-term success is to solidify a trust-based business culture within the company, as well as to recruit staff who act ethically. 

What is the Trust Codex, the Five-Question Test? 

1. Is it true? (Am I honest, do I have moral integrity?)
2. Am I genuine? (Sincere, open and communicative?)
3. Is it fair for all parties? (Decent and just?)
4. Will it promote friendship and goodwill?
5. Will it contribute to the wellbeing of everyone involved?

This builds trust and is, for me, the basis of our foundation’s overarching goal, the promotion of "good leadership," and of my motto, "seeking and promoting goodness itself."
