What is ethics education?

For us, ethics education means developing young people’s ethical awareness and fostering dialogue on values questions. This helps equip them to navigate a changing world and participate actively in shaping its future.

    Promoting ethics education

    Learning humanistic values should be a core component of children’s education and personality development. We therefore support school projects that nurture the social and ethical competence they need for responsible interaction with one another and their surroundings.

    Facilitating values dialogue

    We believe that more communication within and between societies, especially values-oriented communication, is needed to foster mutual understanding and trust. We therefore support institutions and networks that facilitate intercultural and interfaith dialogue.

Our goal

We believe a firm moral compass is a fundamental requirement of good leadership - responsible decision-making demands a fair and principled approach. This is especially important in business and the global economy where higher ethical standards are urgently needed to promote the common good.  

We therefore fund educational initiatives that engage young people with broad ethical questions, intercultural values dialogue and standard-raising in business. We regard Hans Küng’s Global Ethic as a lodestar for our mission.

    Project description

    „Ethik im Dialog Ludwigsburg“ ist ein hybrides Format von Podiumsdiskussionen zu ethischen Themen unserer Zeit. Das interaktive Format wurde 2023 mit dem 2. Platz des IEW – Innovationspreis ethische Weiterbildung“ ausgezeichnet und wird im Rahmen der Projektförderung nun auf die Zielgruppe Schüler und Lehramtsstudierende ausgeweitet.

  • Ethics Education

    Werte im Quadrat Baden-Württemberg

    Project description

    Das von der Stiftung Ein Quadratkilometer Bildung initiierte Projekt „Werte im Quadrat“ fördert eine institutionenübergreifende, sozialraumorientierte Werte- und Demokratiebildung. Ab dem Schuljahr 2026/27 wird „Werte im Quadrat“ unter der Trägerschaft der Agentur mehrwert in die Region Stuttgart transferiert und auch auf weiterführende Schulen ausgeweitet.

    Im Projekt setzen sich Lehr- und Fachkräfte in Workshops und Fortbildungen mit Themen wie Kinderrechten, Vielfalt und philosophischen Gesprächen auseinander, um Wertebildung nachhaltig in ihren pädagogischen Alltag zu integrieren und so Kinder und Jugendliche in ihrer sozialen und demokratischen Entwicklung zu fördern.

    ImpACT - Gemeinsam mehr bewirken

    Project description

    Die Stiftung Weltethos bietet mit dem Projekt ImpACT Schülerinnen und Schülern an beruflichen Schulen in Baden-Württemberg praxisnahe Demokratie- und Wertebildung durch eigenes Engagement.

    Die Zielgruppe entwickelt und realisiert in interaktiven Workshops eigene Engagementprojekte, erlebt Selbstwirksamkeit und stärkt demokratische Kompetenzen wie Teamfähigkeit, Partizipation und Konfliktlösung.

    Berliner Denkspielplätze

    Project description

    Das Projekt Berliner Denkspielplätze verfolgt das Ziel, ein Bildungsverständnis zu stärken, das philosophische und ethische Reflexion bereits im Grundschulalter als essenziell begreift Dabei werden die philosophischen Fragen der Kinder mit künstlerischen Ausdrucksforme verbunden. In verschiedenen “Denkspielplätzen” (Workshops) erschliessen sich die Kinder das Philosophieren ganzheitlich, mit allen Sinnen, dichtend, zeichnerisch, malend und theatral.

Why is ethics education important?

Karl Schlecht explains what it means to him and why it’s a focus for our foundation. 

Ethics education for me means nurturing the humanistic qualities necessary for ethical action and trust-building through lifelong learning. 

What has inspired your deep engagement with ethics, especially trust? 

I’ve been inspired by the Global Ethic approach and the thinking of Erich Fromm. I’ve also learnt the meaning of trust and (creating) a culture of trust through my lifelong entrepreneurial experience as the founder and owner of Putzmeister, a concrete pump manufacturing firm operating globally. No customer buys a product they don’t trust. 

 

Why is ethics education so important? 

My goal for long-term success is to solidify a trust-based business culture within the company, as well as to recruit staff who act ethically. 

What is the Trust Codex, the Five-Question Test? 

1. Is it true? (Am I honest, do I have moral integrity?)
2. Am I genuine? (Sincere, open and communicative?)
3. Is it fair for all parties? (Decent and just?)
4. Will it promote friendship and goodwill?
5. Will it contribute to the wellbeing of everyone involved?

This builds trust and is, for me, the basis of our foundation’s overarching goal, the promotion of "good leadership," and of my motto, "seeking and promoting goodness itself."
